good evening, i have been thinking long and hard over where i want to progress my career over the last few months i have a genuine interest for H&S and have decided that this is the path i want to go down. Now this isnt a should i or shouldnt i post as i have seen many of these, all with mixed responses. This is something i want to do and will be looking at self funding etc as it seems initially the only way in the economic climate to Realistically gain an entry level job.

i have seen lots of advice on here in regards to volunteering to gain experience, now i have enquired with my current employer about shadowing the people here coming in unpaid on days off etc and have recently emailed my local hospital to see if they would consider any volunteer roles in H&S but where else would you guys suggest? schools? building contractors? basically anything you know of that would allow somebody in unpaid im willing to give a try.

look forward to hearing your respnses and thanks in advance!

Dave

David, schools are always looking for Governors with a H&S background. These are managed through your LA. However, really they want someone with the skills and knowledge to provide them the support, and this could be the issue you find with volunteering.

However, work shadowing  may be a route for you. I don't know your background, but those with an engineering or construction backgrounds tend to move into H&S roles in that industry and so on.

So it would be worth looking in an industry where you have experience. However, it may take some time and some work just to find an opportunity, so be prepared for that.

Good luck!

As long as you can get a CRB there are a lot of voluntary groups who would like input, scouts etc. also people who organise summer fates. I would suggest looking locally and building from there.

The one problem i find in looking for a volunteer H&S position is that most H&S companies only work monday to friday, as do those looking for vounteer experience. so unless you are unemployed there is little chance of gaining that experience.
