Afternoon,
We need external access to a boiler flue for maintenance, but it's at the back of buliding, and the building backs directly onto a river. The only thing the contractor can suggest is a temporary bridge which sounds a bit OTT, does anybody have any experience or suggestions of what we might be able to do? The river is not easily wadeable, being deep and wide.
Thanks,
John

You will need to talk to the local environment agency to errect any temporary structure over or adjacent to a river

Depending on what needs doing could you use rope access from the roof?

John, my first thoughts were how was the flue constructed in the first place & could that method be replicated?
If not, could you not use a suspended scaffold?

Could you tether a pontoon and work from that ? Or crane with man basket Or how wide is the building could a scaffold company scaffold along the back of the building as you see them do with bridges.

Build a secondary flue that routes somewhere else - obviously get competent company to install/disconnect/connect. Disconnect old flue internaly, reconnect to new flue.
Relocate boiler.
The cost of the above, cost of maintaining what you have now, and future proofing, removing risk, etc.....

Thanks for the responses everybody, certainly some helpful food for thought. We'll pass the ideas on to our property services people and let the local team determine what will work best.
Relocating the boiler does sound like the best bet in the long run,
John
