This is both basic H&S and a lot more involved than what you are asking. Each of the items would need a risk assessment, which would highlight the multiple risks of each task. Due to this it is hard to give you a straight forward answer.

I am not sure if you are asking a general question, or seeking advice for a specific job. In either case you would need to add a lot more detail to each section. Let's tackle the the first one to give you idea of what I mean.

Driving.

What are they driving? How long are they driving? Who is driving? Where are they driving? Who is in close proximity to their vehicle? etc.

We then would need to know who can be affected by this task. Driver, pedestrians, other drivers, passengers etc.

We then need to look at all the hazards associatiated with driving. Crashing into an obstacle/pedestrian, fatigue, ergonomics etc

These loosely are the risks (in fact it is danger represented by the hazards i.e. the severity of a fail state combined with the likelihood of a fail state happening). For example crashing into a pedestrian in a van at high speed is high risk. When looking at this we can take into account what we are already doing to reduce the risk, seatbelts for example.

Once we have all this in place we would then look a reducing these risks where reasonable and/or necessary. (speed limiters, barriers to protect pedestrians, adjustable seats etc.). What you have left is the residual risk (RR). There will always be some risk to every task, it is about reducing that risk to as low as is practicably possible.

Conclusion

As you can see what you are asking is not something that can be answered on a forum. Especially when you have far more specialised hazards listed, such as working at height and excavations. My explanation is simplifying to the point of the absurd, I am sure many practioners are screaming at the screen. This is why we have H&S professionals. It takes training, knowledge and competence to effectively do what you are asking.

Feel free to ask again with more details and you might get a clearer answer.

You also need to look at specific local legislation for control measures.

Most responses here assume UK based activity so give UK orientated answers

Disappearing threads seem to be quite common recently.

Synopsis was as follows:-

Tell me what the risks are for

  1. driving
  2. hammering
  3. welding
  4. work at height
  5. excavation
  6. something else that I forget

To be fair some disappear as the poster has been prompted they may have chosen the incorrect forum

Others because the poster has identified themselves or the business involved by entering an email address as their forum identity (having failed to read the forum rules before setting up an account)

Occassionally someone heads off on a rant and then realises the post is not entirely appropriate

Whoever the original poster was, their need some help in the basic principles of H&S.

You identify a hazard. A hazard is the same for everybody- acid is corrosive for everybody, driving can kill anybody etc.

The tricky bit is assessing the risk which of course depends on what an individual organisation is doing.

I thought the original thread was 'which one is a risk' because I was going to respond by saying they all are. I'm probably wrong.
