Hi, one of the outcomes of a recent incident explored cognitive bias as one of the factors. Whilst I have a fair awareness of CB, does anyone have suggestions on some sensible study materials, books or even course to build on. Looking for better appreciation and understanding rather than the likes of a full degree course. Thanks in anticipation.

I found that considering it within the broader human factors context helped with my investigations and subsequent activity. I did the three day HF in aviation maintenance course with the CAA at Gatwick some years ago. This built on what I'd read as part of my Diploma and focused on an engineering base with which I was comfortable with from my petrochem background. I find currently lots of articles and postings from a whole range of "gurus, wizards and thought leaders" but it's really difficult to differentiate those of substantive application from those who've majored on marketing... On this basis I found the CAA both authorotive, and interesting.

Hello AcornsConsult, Someone I know over here in Canada did her doctoral dissertation on confirmation bias, and has conducted research into its application in incident investigations. Please PM me if you may be interested in any of this, and I will contact her and see what I can get for you.

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman covers cognitive bias amongst other topics which I have found invaluable in conducting incident investigations and also in understanding human behaviour in general. Well worth a read.
