Hi All,

I am trying to improve the information we provide to all people who may have to access a Train Maintenance depot (staff, train drivers, contractors, etc). I am trying to create a map/schematic of safe and approved walking routes but I am struggling to find information about this on the forums.

I have tried using google maps, but it is quite messy and I am struggling to find a company who may be able to create the schematics.

Anyone have any ideas or have implemented similar things at their locations?

Thanks
Kate

I generally start with the layout drawings for the premises.  Usually these are cluttered with lots of stuff that distracts from this purpose, so I use a basic drawing tool (such as you find in Word, Powerpoint etc) to trace out the outlines that I need to get a simplified layout template, which I then save down and add to for whatever purpose with arrows, labels etc using the same drawing tool.

You might do the same with a map if you don't have a layout drawing.

I am sure there are much cleverer ways of doing this.

thanks 2 users thanked Kate for this useful post.

Thanks Kate.

I do have some drawings, unfortunately not all are digital, and the drawings are zonal, I have had some success with stitching images together but again it gets very cluttered, and I have difficulty in creating a reasonably sized image.

My search shall continue.

Hi kf

Sounds as if you need a CAD technician to sort out the site drawings. Will pay dividends over time.

NOT my field of expertise! However, my understanding is that once you have the basics in place you can add and remove whichever features you want to get a drawing to portray what you want.

So, you might e.g. wish to remove lots of information about underground services that will be cluttering up the drawing and adding in the routes instead for THIS drawing.

You say you have tried Google maps, but I’m a little unsure about what exactly you mean. To explain if I use google to search for a place it first shows me a schematic view of main features of an area (roads, rivers, rail lines ponds and lakes and of course buildings). Then if you wish you can get a view showing trees and bushes like a photo. Isn’t the initial schematic view it shows a good starting point? If the walk route you are trying to show is between buildings along rail lines etc.

If so, could you then not just copy and paste this into Microsoft paint and use that to mark the route on top? I have used Visio for some building schematics, but you have to draw the walls individually.

How big do you envisage this map will be A4, A3, A2 or bigger?

Most local councils have an on-line mapping service (based on the Ordnance Survey) which can show different layers such as electoral boundaries or be used for planning purposes.

I see you are a member of the Railway Group - have you discussed it with them?
