I’m looking for some guidance on the installation standards for a diesel storage tank to be located within our factory boundary. The tank will be used for refuelling forklift trucks (FLTs), bobcats, and front-end loaders.

As I understand it, diesel has a flashpoint of around 70°C, which means it’s not classified as a flammable liquid under standard definitions. However, I’m keen to make sure that all relevant safety, environmental, and installation requirements are properly addressed.

Hi Azeep

To some extent this will depend on the geography your installation is or will be in, not least as that will influence what designs of safety signage to be used.

However, you need to consider not only the nature of diesel, flammable but not THAT flammable, what is around it, whether the installation is indoors or outside and perhaps mostly what impact there is likely to be on the environment in the event of a large leak.

There are national and international standards to help guide you.

Diesel is usually quoted with a flash point of 55*C, so is classed as flamamble under DSEAR.

Depending on the diesel tanks size - typically 2500-5000litres for factory use for refuelling forklift trucks are readily avaialble from various suppliers.

The biggest risk with diesel is environmental damage if the tank leaks.

Also refer to HSG176 Storage of flamamble liquids in tanks - HSE guidance.
