Morning all, My company has been supplied some kit which is used to hydraulically press ends onto cables. The make up of the machine is not off the shelf, but a bespoke assembly of hydraulics and a press, basically just a pump attached to a jig by hoses. The issue I have, is that I am struggling to confirm if it is safe to use. Being from China, and not being sold to us, but sent by our sister company, I have no C E markings, manuafacturers specs, technical literature etc. I am inclined to black mark the item, and prevent it's use, but I do not want to do this prematurely. The hydraulic hoses reach about 10,000 PSI, and I am struggling to find any hydraulic engineering companies who are willing to perform a competent inspection on it. Any advice on how to proceed? The kit and hoses are all brand new and in good condition, but I have no assurance that any of it is up to required standards. Does this count as a power press? Could I get the hoses replaced with ones with relevant documentation? Is this enough? FYI - me vetoing this machine will throw a spanner in the works for a few of the upper management(s) projects so I want to make sure before I put my foot down. Start with the Machinery Directive (which is still enshrined in UK law) where the duties of "importers" which your company would be considered as being along with the duties of manufacturers are stipulated. Your management needs to be careful of holding the opinion any issues you are raising are in some way all the manufacturers problems - in importing the item your company has adopted many manufacturer responsibilities. The phrase "placing on the market" in no way is limited by a lack of financial transaction nor an external customer.
