I came across a situation this week I hadn't seen before. A small/medium sized server room in a 24/7 occupied building with full aspirating AFD (so far so good). However in addition to raising the alarm, the ASD is linked to shut of the power to all servers & UPS supply in the event smoke is detected at a high level.
Staff didn't know why this system is in place, but they assume it's a fire safety feature. They accept that it may cause damage to their IT if it were shut down suddenly.
Has anyone come across this before? Is it a result of a standard (if so, which)? and what could be the rationale for this system, as staff here are on hand 24/7 to manually and remotely shut down power if firefighting operations required it?
I have heard that it was once not unusual to isolate CRAC units (server room air handling units) in such a manner, but it seems wildly OTT to shut down the whole room bearing in mind the ASD may operate for the smallest of smoke sources.
Any ideas????

I am by no means an It specialist but wouldnt the UPS ( uninterruptable being the word) even tho it was shutdown power wise still retain charge/voltage to run the systems ?
From a fire point of view i have came across numerous server room that set of alarms due to high temps or smoke alarms and they havent shut down the system.
As for the staff and the system shutdown damaging their IT i am sure they are on a network and have save points every 5 mins, perhaps get the maintainance company of the fire system in and get the ASD switched to alarm only rather than shutdown ?
