I have been asked to prepare a policy covering the use of toilet facilities by tansvestites and transexuals in a public place of entertainment. Although not strictly as safety issue, there is the risk of violence if other toilet users object, as has happened before - hence the need for the policy. My thoughts are that transvestites use the relevant toilet for their gender (as they were born), whilst transexuals would use the relevant toilet for their adopted gender. I don't want to turn the policy document into war and peace and I wondered if anybody might have suggestions of what to include in the policy, and how to word it? Never a dull moment in this job!
You may like to consider several points, which is why I have quoted your original post. Transvestites are males who dress as female: Some work hard at the appearance while others just adopt the dress: Beard and all. While some may find it hard to believe, with many it is hard to tell the difference (the rating in the social clubs featuring TV/TS/TG is on the scale 1-100%....) Having a TV appear in a male toilet where you can normally expect many users to be not quite compos-mentis (through alcohol) can present difficulties of a violent and sexual nature. Transexual and transgender person, by your post, would be expected to use the female toilets even though they may be at the start of their period of gender re-assignment. Another point, not concerning the problems presented by the non-TV/TS/TG, is that of the personal feelings of the TV/TS/TG person at using the hygiene facilities along with others. Violence is the least of your problems, along with inappropriate comments, some of the TV/TS/TG persons may not want the sexual advances they WILL get.

JohnM You raise some very salient points here and I wish that all who feel that there are not H&S issues involved would stop and reflect on your words together with some others posted here. Given the choice I would always give my work to the non-discriminatory person. Bob
