I work for a major insurance broker where my role includes carrying out risk surveys (property and liability) and advising clients on risk management, health and safety and food safety. I previously worked as a Chef in the RAF for 23 years before being made redundant in 1996. Did a bit of self employment delivering basic food safety and health and safety courses and then moved into in food manufacturing - working with Turkeys and Smash Potato (but not at the same time!!) whilst working towards NEBOSH Part 1 and then latterly to the full Diploma. A second redundancy led me to this role which I love.
Ran the London Marathon twice, aged 49 and 53 and done battle with the Queen of mean on the Weakest Link.

funny post earlier on - saying that everyone on this thread could be a walter mitty. Why would I do that if you do not know who I am? I know that seems a double negative but ask anyone, I am a real person, not an international woman of mystery....

I take offence at your 'Everyone could be Walter Mitty' comments Martin:
I work for a multi-national lingerie and swimwear supplier as fire safety/security officer. I carry out fire safety services at photographic studios mid shoot, plus risk assessments at five star hotels across the world, and carry out a range of close protection work for the models whilst on location.

In House - NHS Facilities safety manager (Nurse advisor) Ive had a reall good go at H&S people for football stadiums(Away Grounds) as I wanted to take my Drum into the ground to get the rest of the fans going but I was refused many times on the grounds of health and safety. When I questioned them as to what health & safety is being put at risk by allowing me into ground with my small drum - Tom Tom (Not Big Bass) they couldnt or wouldnt answer - Just said it was policy! When I told them I played at Blackpool and had carried out a risk assesmsent on it and the risk was miniscule. He just quoted policy!

I am a health and safety advisor on the outside, but I am really a footballer worth millions of pounds, I am married to a super model and own a string of hotels, I come to this country every now and again, but spend the rest of my life living it up. I have also starred in numerous Bond films and I am only 21.
As if anyone would bother making things up about themselves on thses pages.

On a serious note, I gather most people use a different name as not to be identified by an employer and not because they don't want to be identified to each other. When attending branch meetings why not share your IOSH name so at least we can put faces to the names, this may break down barriers during discussions on the pages as you might be able to identify personalities with replies.
The merseyside branch meeting at Aigburth Cricket Club could be a starting point if anyones interested.

In response to Invictus's suggestion I guess that some of us would prefer that forum users do not wear badges with their forum names/pseudonyms if and when they attend IOSH network meetings. Surely part of the fun and mystery of such meetings is wondering if any of the others present are fellow forum users! However, if there is a trend to using such badges, there is always scope for people to be deceptive by displaying names other than their real forum pseudonyms... pseudonymous pseudonyms I suppose! I might even invent a pseudonym for myself such as "thread dredger". Also rumour has it that some of the responses to this thread are considered to be worthy contenders for this year's Carnegie Prize for Contemporary Fiction... but then a prize of that name might also be just a fiction, a figment of someone's imagination! :-)

On the other hand, I wonder if you could guess who's who by observing at said event? I'm sure we've all built up a mental image of what forum contributors look like, it would be comical to see how close or far from reality these assumptions are!!

SP900308 - No offence taken by me regarding your imagination of what I look like. In fact, it prompts a suggestion for forum users wishing to wear forum pseudonym badges at IOSH meetings to go in disguise! Some might even consider cross-dressing if this is feasible. I got rid of my beard a few years ago so it's possible that a good wig, reasonable make-up and appropriate padding for me might fool most or all people if only I could remember to maintain a suitably falsetto voice. However, it would be prudent to check first that going to IOSH meetings in disguise doesn't breach any part of the IOSH Code of Conduct. If disguises and cross-dressing are feasible and permitted I might consider displaying 'Clairel' on my pseudonym badge...but perhaps not as this would clash with her claim earlier in this thread to be an "International woman of mystery" However, just think, if several or more people at a meeting had badges with 'Clairel', it might help to perpetuate her mystery status! :-)

I asked the OP because I detect in some replies to posts a lack of understanding in health and safety matters which causes me concern if those reading the posts take what has been said as the gospel truth.
I wondered what the repercussions would be?
Rich None, as this is simply a discussion forum. This has been subject to great debate before. I agree with Jake ,

How can any of you be Clairel, I thought she had gone to live on her own island away from people, like a hermit. Where she is free to mow the lawn bare foot and ride her bike down volcano’s without over protective H&S bods trying to interfere.
She inspired me to see how much an island would cost and they are not as bad as you may think. More money than I have, but still not that bad.
I would obviously make sure my island had at least one other island between myself and Clairel in order for her to maintain her privacy.

Again, to then name a company! Not a good idea once again IMO. Of course you have ever right to feel a sense of pride in a successful piece of work you have achieved but it’s a public forum so I'll say my piece. DP

I'll set aside my potential bias of opinion in relation to no-win-no-fee lawyers but must make the point that it's bad form to name and shame a company (not sure if what you posted is publically available?) and to gloat about such matters. It's like myself or others bragging about getting a personal injury claim thrown out on a technicality etc. It's not in the spirit of what we're all trying to achieve and it's just antagonistic.

Flysafe
Not sure about mountains with cloud cover, but there is one called “Lagoon Caye” which is 14 acres in Belize and is one million US dollars (£623,500). You can get smaller ones of about an acre for sixty thousand US dollars, but of course they don’t have their own lagoon.
PS Caye means low elevation sandy Island

Thanks Chris 42, the fluffy white stuff I am after is powder snow. A helicopter landing pad, a helicopter and a pilot would also be useful so I can be whisked repeatedly to the top.

chris42 - In view of predicted significant rises in sea level due to global warming/climate change it seems prudent to advise seekers of islands to think carefully about acquiring low elevation ones with names incorprorating 'Caye' !
Like flysafe I'd much rather have an island with high rugged mountains for walking and scrambling and perhaps ski-ing in winter. Am not too bothered about having a helicopter and pilot, etc. as I couldn't afford them. In fact I couldn't afford to buy the sort of island I'd like, so I'll just continue with visiting such islands off the west coast of Scotland. Unfortunately snow doesn't stay long on their mountains because of warmth from the Gulf Stream.

I don't know if you noticed but the island we are currently on has been a tad waterlogged recently, so all things being equal I'd rather be on a warm one.
O yeah, by the way my earlier post on being unemployed is technically not correct according to the tv the last two days. Apparently I'm a layabout scrounger who can't get out of bed in the morning as my neighbours do. Which is odd as I get up between 6 and 7 every day regardless of not working, which is sometimes before my neighbours.
