Hi All
Just wondered if anyone knew of a way in or could offer structured advice with regards starting out a career in the Nuclear industry as a H&S professional. From my point of view it looks like unless you already work in nuclear, know someone in the sector or start out in an aligned role to safety within the sector it is pretty difficult to get in.
In terms of my background I am currently H&S Advisor working in Health & Social Care sector (have 1yr exp in Pharma), but am a relative newcomer to the profession at 23. I hold an MSc in Occupational Health & Safety, BSc Hons in Biomedical Science Physiology & Pharmacology and Grad IOSH to be confirmed.
Would appreaciate any comments or advice with regards career progression/career development.

Try Amec at Booths Park at Knutsford.
Lots of technical staff required in he engineering design stages etc.
Your Biomedical qualifcations might help you get a start as a health physicist/radiation adviser

Sling your net as wide and as far as possible as there is still big bucks in N especially in decommissioning and outages - better than most off-shore areas
Having worked in both nuclear [safety cases, RPS as well as most other areas inclusive of construction & decommissioning) and Health and Social Care and its true that H&SC is far more complex and hazardous in real terms but those in nuclear have no idea as to skill and knowledge required and do not know how transferable skills are e.g. how many in nuclear have undertaken risk asessments that result in breaking the law but are acceptable to the enforcers as there is no other option e.g justifying locking the 'means of escape' when people are present - not many I think but this is an area covered in H&SC but not in nuclear
keep slogging and you should get there as you must be good to have survived in H&SC areas
NB: lots of plant ops moving to hinkley point so get down there and have a look

Appreciate the comments and words of advice, very helpful. Its good to know that there are other professionals out there who have gone through such career paths and dabbled in other sectors. Whilst I enjoy the variety of H&SC I do not feel the sector is conducive to a pro active H&S professional, with my skills and academic knowlegde base rarely used. I'll stick at it and look out for the few and far between opportunities that do come up in the Nuc sector!

Another route for you to explore might be as a Biological Safety Advisor.
It could be worth having a look at any positions that are being advertised by the University and Research Sector

Some of the sites across the UK are decommissioning and so are finding it hard to keep a hold of the workforce. Send you CV to these sites first. http://www.onr.org.uk/Go to this website for a list of all the nuclear facilities in the UK - Send your CV in to these too as you have nothing to lose. In addition the likes of Babcock/Cavendish operate some of these sites, so you could try there too. Best of luck! Andrew
