Hi, A little background of myself, I have a degree in Risk Management, I have recently passed my NEBOSH National General Certificate and I am looking to get involved with H&S in any area, preferably construction or oil & gas but I have little to no experience in it. In saying that, I have recently began some work shadowing with an oil & gas company in Grangemouth where my role is only just listening and learning, I have no deadlines and will not be signing off anything etc. What are some of the things I should be doing to best utilise my time here and how would I be able to show this on my CV/linked-in. All responses are appreciated. Thanks.

You may only be required to 'listen and learn' in this shadowing capacity..... however, there is nothing to stop you duplicating the work as though you are living in a 'parallel universe'.....document your 'observations', attempt to draw up your own conclusions without input from the individuals you are 'shadowing' - perhaps you may even have the opportunity to contribute to the final 'solutions'....there is usually more than one way of 'solving an issue'. Note the challenge. Determine the final outcome requirements Try and find a solution prior to learning of the methods being employed by the person you are shadowing You may have 'solved' the issue via different means. Both procedures may be effective. Set yourself the challenge to determine which procedure will be most effective. Use the risk management skills from your degree to determine if the most cost effective measure is the most risk reducing effective measure. Use your analysis skills with respect to 'cost' and 'risk' for time, finance, overall health and safety risk reduction. All of us should be learning something new everyday and determining a way how to apply the new knowledge. All the best. Karen
