I am currently working in health and safety in an FE college, I have nebosh general cert and a few other health and safety qualifications (nebosh being the highest) I have been doing this job since 2010 and I really love it but what I really want to do is go work in health and safety in an airport, I worked briefly in an airport just as bar staff one summer as a student and I love the hustle and bustle of these places. I realise there are a lot of things going on there and I am sick of people saying to me why do I want to do that and putting walls in the way. So I am not having it there is a path to where I want to be and I need some help finding it so I am starting here.

First were do you live?
To start with, the money is going to be poor so you don't really want to relocate etc.
There are lots of support companies operating in the background at airports and my guess these would be the easiest way in.
You problem is identifying them, as they maybe be quite big companies but not household names if you see what I mean.

If you're thinking about health & safety within an operational environment, e.g. aircraft and vehicle movements on the apron, then you'd need to contact the airport operator.
As an example, my understanding is that airside safety at Bristol Airport is handled by their Terminal Operations team rather than by outside (third party) contractors.

I am thinking health and safety yes, and land side / terminal operations is more where I sit if it is broken down like that. These are all things I need to find out.
Thanks for the feedback I have some research to do! :)

A few words of encouragement and maybe something to ponder.
Moving industries within HSSE is definitely possible, but certainly requires some planning and thought.
I got my lucky break with a H&S role in a national retailer, it helped I had a degree, but I had 0 experience. Transferable skills and some commerciality helped secure the role. My scope was the retail stores and warehouse operations.
A few years down the line I knew I wanted to get involved with higher hazard H&S and as luck would have it had a call from a recruiter about role in an O&G company, but to work on their retail HSSE management system. 2 years down the line, after making a point about wanting to progress, I have now managed to secure a secondment to an Oil Storage Terminal from which I can hopefully move into this area of the business (next stop a refinery hopefully!).
Being CMIOSH helps in-so-much-as it's a strong card to deal at interview, my first line manager in my current company had very little knowledge of H&S, and didn't question my competence so the interview was very much around personality and soft skills (an easy sell, with some practice and prep). You need to major on your transferable skills and link your experience to the type of activities in your target industry.
- I would look to becoming CMIOSH - it really will help.
- Do your research on companies that work in your target industry - do they have other operations that are more aligned with your experience? This could be an "in" for you to then transfer.
- Network at branch meetings - you never know who you will meet (the London branch meeting I attended when I was in London had a safety manager from Heathrow, for example).
- Contact recruiters, they'll be the ones to get you an interview
