Hi there,
Firstly my name is Adam and i'm new to the forum so just to say hello.
I was looking for some advice please. I'm 28 and currently employed as a wholetime fire-fighter and have a secondary contract as a self employed electrician.
I am really interested in getting into either health and safety in the construction industry or the fire risk assessment sector.
I am a qualified electrician with 12 years experience, and have been in the fire service for 9 years now.
I am about to register on a NEBOSH General Certificate, and was wondering with the expertise on here, if I would be better then going on and doing the Fire Certificate or the Construction certificate?
Any help or opinion is really appreciated.
Thanks, Adam.

Hi Adam,
If you complete the general certificate (NGC1-3) you will only have to sit parts two and three of the fire/construction certificates if undertaken within five years of passing.
Hope this is helpful.

Hi Adam,
There are three options based on your interests:
1. NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
2. NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
3. NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
If you want to specialize then I suggest you go for 2 of 3. But as Peter points out you could do the general Cert first and then it would be easier to get 2 or 3 afterwards. More expensive route but will enable you to get more knowledge before commiting one way or the other!

If you can get onto your area fire inspection / enforcement team you would then usually go through the fire college for training.
Then there are 'add on' courses such as Fire Door Inspection etc which boost the CV and knowledge.
If going down the fire route register with the IFE.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

See the views of a few people on the Australian chap who wants to come to the UK.
Same applies for UK nationals - moving/training into/for h&s work is not recommended. Its not worth the money, given the current economic situation & job market.
I would train/invest your time/effort and money elsewhere.
