Can anyone help me confirm...

A forklift generally requires a thorough inspection every year, unless the risk assessment identifies harsh euse or environment that could require a shorter time.

I guess, as people carrying equipment must be thoroughly inspected every 6 months, then it would suit that a forklift that uses a man basket must therefore follow a six monthly inspection?

Andy,

I don't believe that is the case. All the FLT's at my workplace have an annual Thorough Examination and all are capable of being fitted with a non-integrated working platform. The platforms are also subject to an annual inspection.

Andy,

You are absolutely correct. If a FLT is used to lift a 'man cage' the frequency of examining for the FLT (and cage) drops down to 6 monthly.

Thank you for your replies.

Much appreciated. I've just read through PM28 which is very informative.

Thanks again

Yep 6 month but don't forget these are to be used in exceptional circumstances only and not as the NORM

Thanks again for the info guys,

I found this in the "Rider-operated lift trucks
Operator training and safe use
Approved Code of Practice and guidance" which may help others following this post.

18 You should make sure the lift truck has been thoroughly examined by a competent person within the previous 12 months (six months for equipment used for lifting people), or sooner if the competent person considers this appropriate, or in accordance with an examination scheme. In this context, the competent person would be a qualified engineer or similar. If a truck is assembled on site, it needs to be thoroughly examined before use. Also see paragraphs 165-173 for more information.

Remembering that the "Rider-operated lift trucks operator training and safe use
Approved Code of Practice and guidance" is not quasi legal as is the LOLER or PUWER ACOP's However its better than nothing

Don't really deal with FLT's MEWP's etc anymore but decided to look at the regulations, only realised that they now have a self assessment that makes it more interesting as you get to answer questions at the end of each section. I gather this can be used for CPD purposes aswell.
