My company has the corporate objective to implement ISO 14001 by the end of the year. My role is to manage this process. The organisation already has a number of systems in place that benefit the business and mostly cover the clauses of the Standard - internal audit, management review etc. Where there are gaps, and areas we are weak, this is where I am focusing my attention to ensure we are in as good enough position as we can be before certification auditing begins later in the year. We run a number of environmental monthly reports based on KPIs. One of these is on CO2 emissions. Although I can calculate CO2 emissions through energy use, one report that we do not run is CO2 emissions through business travel. This is because we do not currently have a way of extracting raw mileage data from expenses claims. My question to the Forum is, is it a requirement of our Aspects & Impacts Register that we have to report all CO2 emissions, even those relating to business travel? Or would just reporting energy use CO2 emissions be sufficient? I am concerned that not currently being able to fully report emissions data would hinder our chances of successful ISO 14001 certification.

Where does it state in ISO14001 that you have to monitor co2 ? They can only audit you on what the standard asks for, not some other guidance, not the auditors opinion. So what if you do manage to do it, are you intending a target of reduced CO2 from business travel ? Don't get me wrong you can have a skype meeting etc so no need to travel, but really. You do more business one year than the last and it goes up, next year not so good so it goes down. Just MHO of course. I will admit I do calculate it, because I can easily enough. It is only a vague estimate though, nothing special or that accurate, but who is going to argue with me ? Company does not care, auditor does not care, nobody actually cares. Chris
