Hello,

Just looking for some advice. I need to have additional professional indemnity insurance as my employer cover wont cover me for a p/t project that I want to work on. I decided to get some quotes but I am surprised that the vast majority excludes asbestos. I am not going to be working directly with asbestos or carrying out any survey work (although I am qualified), but I will be providing information on managing the risks of asbestos exposure.

However, all insurance providers that I have spoken to won't entertain the idea. I am surprised how many OSHCR consultants list asbestos as a topic in their profile so how can they be insured for this work - a requirement of OSHCR?

Any assistance gratefully received ...

Cheers

I got my PI through the IOSH 'benefits' package with Trafalgar, then added construction sites excluding asbestos the second year - big jump in premiums.

Those advertising that they do asbestos work should / will have the necessary insurance but will be paying quite a lot of money for it.

It might depend on how you phrase the contact with insurers, sounds like you are looking at training or briefing and not physical work, make the difference clear to the brokers and they should be able to source cover - but it may be expensive.

Hope it helps

Hi
Yes you are right about them excluding Asbestos. Think they wanted nearly a couple of grand extra at the time.

I was insured by Co a few years ago for my PI cover and explained to them that I only wanted to give advice on Asbestos management but will not be carrying out surveys or be involved in the removal of it and they said that this was OK. (Sorry but cannot recall the Co now)
Can you go back to them and explain you will be giving info on Asbestos like you would with general H&S subjects? Or use a broker to sort your insurance?

Regards

Brian,

My portfolio includes construction work.
When I added to my portfolio 'Asbestos Awareness', and explained no advice on working with asbestos, they did not add anything to the premium.

Insurance covers 'negligence or breach of duty of care arising directly from your performance of asbestos related training services'
but does not cover 'Any Claim arising from asbestosis and/or related disease directly or indirectly caused by or contributed to by the manufacturing, mining, processing, removal, transport, distribution, and/or storage of asbestos, asbestos products or use of any Product containing asbestos'
