Hi All,
Richard Jones - IOSH Head of Policy and Public Affairs - has prepared the official IOSH statement on Brexit. Please find below statements for both IOSH stakeholders, and the media.
Thanks,
Anup
Brexit – IOSH statement for stakeholders:
As a chartered professional body, charity and international NGO, IOSH has global reach and has remained entirely neutral on UK membership of the European Union.
Now that the referendum result is known to be that the UK will leave the EU, our aim is to help ensure that health and safety standards are protected and enhanced during the resulting period of change and under any new trading arrangements that may be developed.
IOSH is exceptionally well-placed to do this, as we have members all over the world, including in most European Member States. We are also active members of ENSHPO (European Network of Occupational Safety and Health Professional Organisations), as well as supporting health and safety improvements in the accession countries and Balkan network.
In addition, IOSH has long-standing and positive working relations with European institutions, working as partners on Europe-wide campaigns and engaging with European research and training networks. We will continue to lead and assist our members and fellow professionals across Europe and beyond – working to support organisations and improve health and safety management worldwide.
IOSH believes that effective regulation, socially responsible business practices and applied international standards can all help support good health and safety performance. As well as saving lives, they can also strengthen reputation, resilience and results – essential during periods of significant change and uncertainty.

Brexit - IOSH statement for media:
IOSH Head of Policy and Public Affairs Richard Jones said: “Post-Brexit, the UK now has less influence over EU law. Now we’re exiting, it’s vital the UK continues to apply our successful risk-based health and safety system, which includes laws from EU directives, because it’s been found to be fit for purpose by several independent reviews and is respected and imitated across the world.
“IOSH will continue to promote agreed international standards and to defend against any erosion of health and safety protections.
“As UK organisations will want to continue to trade with Europe, it will be in everyone’s interest to maintain the status quo.
“The UK has already helped to influence sound foundations for European health and safety and beyond and our expertise will continue to be sought and valued.” Edited by user 24 June 2016 10:17:57(UTC)

Clearly our international links to members will become even more important in the UK's post EU existence.
We need to see how we can improve the effectiveness of our groups so that we can maintain our influence on world safety and how it will impact on safety in the UK.

At the moment words are just words and that applies to statements being issued - nobody know the final outcome and unless parliment is being lobbyed then words are just words at the moment -

and what have you based that little gem on? Europe (including UK) has worked tirelessly to uphold H&S legislation despite whatever myths and fake news stories abound.
We (mankind/civilisation/controlling mind etc) should be aiming higher than just Europe, and unite H&S worldwide. We praise ourselves in the UK for not sending children up chimneys anymore, while wearing shoes made by children in a diabolical pox infested H&S nightmare factory somewhere in India. Anything that stops integration and co-operation is stupidity as far as I can fathom. That's not a political view, it's a humanitarian one.

As an open and inclusive organisation IOSH welcomes discussion. To accuse people presenting an opinion as "moaning" is a way of undermining their view, and them. While it may be easy for some to handle for others it may feel like being bullied into silence, not good.
"out means out"? What does that mean? In my garden, am I out? If I declare homosexuality, am I out? In the context of the UK leaving the EU "out" means nothing as yet because no one knows what it will be. So I would appreciate less sloganising in the debate and more evidence based opinion.
Good luck to all.

With apologies to Roundtuit for resurrecting this thread, but prompted by a posting by Mike Kelly, how many UK citizen members reading these Forums have applied for second passports so that they can continue to benefit from EU membership after 31 December 2020 (or whatever date is agreed for the UK's Brexit - the actual date, not the pretence date that happened)?

Here is a thought - pick a country and be an active citizen.
Dual citizenship causes issues world wide with people detained around the globe because they chose to keep one foot (passport) in their mother country meaning they can be treated in the same manner as the locals rather than a foreign visitor as designated by their second passport. If you wander the globe with two passports you double your chances of potentially upsetting the nation you are present in, or travelling through. Why should one (of two or more) nation(s) then be put upon to act as your consulate if you can't be bothered to decide before being subject to local arrest? BTW my nephew recently obtained an Italian passport at his Italian mother's insistance on top of his UK (sorry Peter the birth certificate was actually Scottish) passport - father English.

Three years after haggling in the British Parliament, upheavals at the top of the government, and blaming Brussels to delay its exit, Britain concludes the chapter on approximately half a century of close ties with Europe at 11 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time, Jan. 31, 2020. If you want to more information about the Brexit you can visit the site.
