Right everyone my first post can you point me in the direction of what qualifications you need to act as either Principal Designer or CDM Advisor. I've currently got AaPS and Grad IOSH , Done PD Course. NVQ Diploma Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety . And worked in construction for 18 Year.

Richard

Heavily dependent on size and complexity of projects.

For most of our projects our internal standards are:

Lead Designer supporting PD

Appropriate Engineering or Construction qualification

+ one of:

  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate
  • Member of ICE Health and Safety Register

  • Registered Member of the Association for Project Safety

  • Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner (CF/MIOSH)

CDM Advisor

Engineering, construction or health and safety qualification

Significant experience of delivery of the role of CDM Co-ordinator

+ one of the bulleted qualifications/memberships above.

My cutting and pasting is going a bit awry!

We also have staff with less qualifications and/or experience providing assistant CDM Advisor services.

Good luck, Peter

I lead a PD practice within one of the top 10 largest construction contractors.  When we now recruit, we are now only after practitioners who are able to grasp, resolve and manage CDM PD design issues and not ones who just tell us how the 2015 CDM Regulations work.

Having recently discussed our CDM/PD requirements with one recruitment agency specialising in CDM/PD advisors, they quickly identified that the industry now falls into two distinct camps with the first camp now only wanting chartered construction professionals who can lead this new CDM role and the second camp is one which still relies on the APS CDM model.  It is also worth pointing out that the HSE is now promoting a model where the Lead Designers automatically take on the PD role, with no support.

Richard, How close are you potentially to acquiring CIOB chartered membership?
