Hi
Having NEBOSH Gen Cert for some 3 years and very happy in current job but wondering how to progress and best route as an H & S adviser in current workplace. Don't feel NEBOSH Diploma is the best route for the type of work done - NVQ level??? CPD as Tech IOSH? Any other awarding bodies and routes anyone could suggest to further H & S qualifications? Appreciate any advice.

Hi Dave C, The question of progression in current workplace......well, my take on it is that if you do an NVQ 5 style qual, you cover what is in your workplace, so that could be a good option.
But if you look at the bigger picture and want to work in another sphere in the medium to long term, then the Diploma will take you into those areas and maybe others besides. Unlocks a lot of doors, as many would testify (and doubtless others will mention other qualification routes too).
I guess my advice would be to look at the bigger picture and what would happen if your company folded for whatever reason and how likely you would be to get another role in a similar company anywhere near your home address. Personally, I live in a very rural area, and I have diversified out of automotive Tier 1 quality assurance into EHS, so I have three strands of work to try and gain employment from should anything go wrong. Hope these thoughts help.

The current NVQ is not what it used to be. There are now a number of questions to be answered within the realms of the units, whilst also providing detail and evidence on how you could or do address the learning criteria. Whilst and NVQ is work-based, evidence is typically to be within a 2 year period of creation, however supported by a professional discussion, this can be increased. The key to the NVQ is the understanding of the Assessor on you the learner and the qualification itself. A good assessor will challenge your evidence in order that you demonstrate compliance. This route of qualification is practical, with an ever emerging academic requirement. NEBOSH Diploma is totally academic, leading to problematic elements when in the workplace because of the lack of understanding of the practicality of requriements and their implementation. NCRQ (I think its called) is another route which offers 'project based learning' thought still assessed, I'm not overly sure on this, but does entail a good bit of practical input. I like the NVQ, though you need a good assessor who understands the qualification and you the learner in order to challenge you.

I think it depends on what you want to achieve ultimately. If it is just a qualification for IOSH membership requirements then NVQ may be best as you could complete it based on your current knowledge and workplace. However, if you want focus on learning new things that you can use in the future for a new job or within your current role then possibly the Diploma will be better.
If you already have a degree then possibly a Masters or if you don't then a degree could be an option too.
You also have the more specialist courses such as the NEBOSH Construction certificate etc. which maybe be beneficial if you have an interest in a particular area.
Ultimately pick something you'll enjoy as that is half the battle I find! Good luck with whichever path you choose.

The purpose of a discussion is to give individuals a chance to start their own particular discussions. Constraining this flexibility to post new substance is doubting of the people who go to the gathering.

I agree 74_C San. Zayn offered a worthwhile comment but followed with an opportunistic linked advertisement. This only serves to undermine the purpose of these forums. I always look forward to reading thought provoking questions and responses from dedicated members.

Hi having just completed my NVQ Level 5 they are a huge amount of work and what you submit and what is accepted is based on your provider so if taking and NVQ route research who to do it with in detail and whether you will actually learn any new skills. I don't think IOSH recognise Level 5 now either however can't get this confirmed as membership team haven't replied to my calls or email.

I’m saddened that an organization like IOSH, (of which I am a Chartered Member), is failing to communicate with you. My guidance and communication from Thomas Laxton with the IOSH membership team was fantastic. Unfortunately I’ve seen many comments similar to yours. It appears that the membership team is understaffed, overworked or disorganized. I wish I could vote for additional membership team staffing. I know our membership rates went up recently. Perhaps some of the revenue could be put towards supporting the membership department. As far as I’m concerned this is the most important service IOSH provides.

I have leveled a Slayer to 40, a Chosen and currently leveling my Mara farmalt. PQ's, epic quest chains and SC's are the way forward. Only gear you need are the renown greens from war quarter. At 31, hanmer the rvr and sc's hard till you get rr40 then you can walk into anni/merc at rank 35 jiofi.local.html forpc
