I am looking for assistance as to whether our Warehouse Manager whom is also the Fire Marshal requires training to complete a Hot Works Permit?

There is conflicting information with Training Organisations and the HSE - unless I am looking in the wrong area of the HSE?

Does he need to get involved with hot work? Further information required.

I wouldn't think that fire marshal training would include how to complete a hot works permit, that is a more specialised area, so my immediate answer would be 'Yes'. Surely anyone will require instruction/training to fill in a permit?

Please see link below which you should find useful when deciding on what level of supervision you require for a permit to work system (hot work or otherwise):

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg250.pdf

Given that it is the warehouse manager, whilst they might make someone responsible for issuing permits and closing thme out, it would be prudent to at least have an awareness of the requirements and implications.

The level of supervision and who otherises will be determined by your risk assessment and size of your organisation. So, it might not necessarily be the warehouse manager.

Thanks for the replies,

He does get involved in the hot works and has received training on this.

Also I mention the Fire Marshal as the HSE states it is recommended for a fire marshal to be in the vicinity.

On further investigation the HSE also states a Competent Person - so i think i have now answered my own question!

Thanks again.
