Hi all,

Would anyone have some advice on a recommended path to gain competency in carrying out DSEAR assessments?

Any help appreciated.

As with many aspects of h&s - it depends..........

What type of DSEAR assessments are you doing?

Full chemical reactions with DSEAR damgerous substances? Then some sort of chemical qualification

Finished products - as in fuels and gases?

Small scale sites - small quantities or large petro-chemical process plants/oil refineries?

You may well need an understanding of gas/fuel dispersion charateristics of vapour clouds. If assessing pool fire and jet fire consequences how to assess thermal loads/safety distances, explosion over pressures.

On the other hand for small scale workshops etc, reading the guidance and being able to interpret a safety data sheet might be sufficient.

If going on to hazardous area classification - then a good understanding of IP 15 or BS60079-10 or SR25 for methane systems.

More information required, what do you have in mind?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I'm doing alot of fire risk assessment and getting alot of requests about doing DSEAR assessments also.  We currently work in industrial sites of all sizes, but mainly small to medium size businesses.  None of these are chemical processing sites but do have spray booths, flammable paints, gases and biogas instalation, that type of thing.

I'm just not sure of where the best place to start is.
