Hi, first post for me so go easy please! I’ve been working in the diving industry both inshore and offshore for the last 20 years, last 10 as a supervisor and project manager and I’ve always been keen on the H&S side of things and almost without noticing as I’ve progressed I’ve become more and more involved in HIRAs, risk assesments and site inspections etc.. I’ve been fortunate and worked all over the world in oil & gas, renewables and civil construction but always on the diving side of things. I’ve just done the NEBOSH general certificate in January this year with a view to pursuing a career in H&S and I’m still torn about which way to go with it, offshore is where I think I’d be most comfortable as it’s what I know most about but I’ve done that and been away from home loads for the last 12 years or so, that leaves moving to a totally new industry, I’ve got plenty of experience in hot works, confined space, managing rope access teams, dealing with heavy lift cranes and managing busy sites (inshore) so I suppose the question is..... .....Will my skill set and experience be seen as transferable to a different industry sector? Another question I have is regarding agencies, which ones are best or is it simply a case of registering with all of them and applying for everything that comes up? I’m under no illusion that I’m just going to jump onto the ladder a few rungs for the bottom.

Hi Danny.

It looks like you have some great experience and transferrable skills that many organisation would consider valuable. I would encourage you to document these and contact an agency for some advice to see what is out there and how your skills can be matched with potential organisations.

Best of luck

Thanks, I’ve registered with a few different agencies some H&S specific and a couple of offshore specialist agencies. Guess I’ll just see what happens for now 🤞. Bit jittery about the idea of a job interview as in 29 years since leaving school ive still never had one. I’ll just have to carry on arguing with cost cutting companies and clients for the time being which isn’t so bad..... I’ve yet to lose! 😂
