What percentage of UK safety professionals study at University for a Degree - University v Other Routes to HSE Qualification

Good evening everyone, Does anyone know roughly what percentage of UK safety professionals studied at university to gain the qualifications compared to going down the NEBOSH Dip or NVQ route.

I think the correct answer to your question is "nobody knows".

Lots of problems here including how to define a "safety professional" in order to work out the total number in the population you are asking about.

So, as example, is a specialist in "human factors" or "ergonomics" a "safety professional"?

....or the person who works out how many fire detection units to put in a building and where?

The pragmatic answer is "probably a small minority" - many COMPETENT H&S professionals never even study to degree level.

And of course it is very usual for health and safety to be a career that people go into later in life, rather than starting out in it as a new graduate or otherwise qualified person.  In that case, if they do a degree at the traditional age to do degrees, they will already have a degree in something else and may have little incentive to get another one.

Further to Kate's post, I'm one of those second career safety people.  I have a degree in HR, worked in the public sector - not in HR - before doing my NEBOSH GC and coming into safety.  Subsequently did my NEBOSH Diploma (and NCRQ one interetingly as I wanted to compare) and Environmental qualifications.  No interest in studying a HS related degree.  Did consider a Masters but think it would be pure vanity and not an undertaking I have the motivation to consider at the minute.  I'm a bit educated out after studying 2 diplomas and the IEMA certificate back to back.

I have a degree in Environmental Health - all EHOs under the age of 57/58 will have degrees or Masters. There are many of us working solely in health & safety and members of IOSH>
