Can anyone point me in the right direction related to guidance available surrounding the use of synthetic grass in children's playgrounds? Having read through BS EN 1176/1177 it does not make any refernce to the use of artificial grass surfacing requirements, only loose fill materials and normal grass. After a recent inspection of playground equipment I have some concerns based on the critical fall height from a playground platform. I understand that under 600mm some form of impact attenuation is still required but unsure as to what should be in place in terms of impact absorption of anything above 600mm. After seeking advice from a RoSPA playground inspector, I have contacted the equipment manufacturer to seek clarifcation but nothing back as of yet.

Hi Clane I think you have approached this in the right way. RoSPA has far more expertise in play safety than IOSH is ever likely to have and the suppliers should be able to advise on current expectations. For reasons of mostly historical fluke, "my" football team is QPR who were the first substantial football club in the UK to experiment with artificial turf. Didn't end well but the technology has advanced since. Obviously not a direct comparison with say falling 600mm from playground equipment but the principles are similar.
