Fresh off the presses from Canada and I don't mean the election results......

....but rather the provisional statistics for accidents and ill health for 2023.

National report shows rise in workplace fatalities in 2023 | Canadian Occupational Safety

....with a link to (PDF) 2025 Report on Work Fatality and Injury Rates in Canada

May be it might come down in part to this report being written by researchers rather than a Governental body but perhaps the HSE could learn something in terms of messaging, instead of routinely publishing the numbers of people sustaining fatal accidents at work, and then some months later putting those numbers into the context of the estimated number of premature deaths from work-related ill health.

Base line stats for Canada in 2023 - 381 deaths from work injuries, but 675 from occupational ill health with a warning that these numbers may be underreported.

Totally 1056 which sounds high given that the population of Canada was about 40 million compared with about 67 million in the UK but the numbers cannot be compared like for like not least due to different methods of counting wherein the HSE knowingly excludes many work-related deaths from its statistics - e.g. most work-related road traffic injuries.

So, in simple terms, two thirds of the premature deaths are from occupational ill health, rather than accidents at work, a proportion in line with ILO global estimates.
