Posted By Ray Littlewood Hi all! My current working role is one of a 'building custodian' within local government. The job requires that you are 'jack of all trades' if you like. Although there are several dedicated H&S consultants/advisers within, I felt it was important to gain an insight into H&S myself because it was becoming more apparent that this was an integral part of my daily work. I had not done any further education since leaving school and therefore did not want to enrol on anything too intense in the first instance. Last year I enrolled and eventually passed with credit the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Advanced Health & Safety Certificate. This has been most useful and I learnt a great deal although I am under no disillusions, and am fully aware that this course only brushed the surface. While I have no intention of attaining a full-time H&S occupation, I wondered if there were any more qualifications that could take me one step further whilst still remaining an all rounder. My course tutor tried and tried to get recognition for this qualification from IOSH, but alas to no avail. If this is the case I would imagine that on a scale of 1 - 10 that this qualification struggles to reach a 2/3 if that. Am I correct?? I would be most obliged for any advice. PS - I've found the forum to be most useful up to press and have found some very relevant postings over the last few months. Keep up the good work!! RL - West Yorkshire

Posted By Martin R. Bessant Ray, Apart from the excellent advice which has been posted to you, can I suggest that you consider joining the IOSH Public Services Specialist Group. They have a considerable number of members working in local government and also have local groups in IOSH Branches. They will have someone local to you who will be able to assist you with your studies. Details can be obtained via this website on the Specialist Groups pages. Good Luck. Posted By peter gotch Ray, I think that maybe you should think about doing an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Safety and Health Practice, since I suspect that your role is such that you would get the opportunity to get the evidence for a Portfolio. Good luck, whatever you decide. P

Posted By Ashley Williams Sorry this reply is a little late. Are you a member of a union? If so ask your branch if you can go on the Stage 3 Health and safety course run by the TUC. Its accepted by IOSH subject to a couple of things at Tech SP level.
