Posted By Barry hutton I am looking for advice from Health and Safety professionals currenlty working in the NHS. I have been offered a position as a Health and Safety Manager for a new NHS Trust. I would be interested to know what the terms and conditions are like and whether it is heavily bureacratc. Also because its a clinical setting is there a "them and us" culture, between those with a clinical background and those without. If anyone has experience of working for both the NHS and the Local Authoirty, which was better?

Posted By steve williamson Hi Barry, As a Health & Safety Manager you should expect to go onto a Senior Manager (SMP) grade rather than an Admin and Clerical. Trusts still vary widely, be they Acute, Primary, Special or Mental Health Partnerships but all have their own machiavellian bureaucracies and a pronounced clinical/support culture. If you are coming from a MAPS background the biggest change you will notice is that you will more than likely be a lone ranger. Only the very largest trusts have more than one safety adviser so its quite possible to go from discussing the decontamination of endoscopes straight onto assessing the cleaning out of underground reservoirs. That's one of the aspects I enjoy but I'm wierd. IOSH is working hard to get the Healthcare Specialist Groups going nationwide so there's the opportunity to network with other strugglers. Best of luck, Steve
