Hi folks,
Is there any chance that a company will employ someone in a job with Health and Safety with just the Nebosh General Certificate or do you have to have a least the Diploma for any real type of money jobs.
Any real experience is hard to get when newly qualified!

I don't want to sadden you but in brief No! I have had the Cert for 3 years and after 30 or so applications I got nowhere. I have almost completed a diploma and will now hold out some hope. However experience is the thing. Remember the chicken and the egg?
Many on this forum have had difficulties gaining empoyment without experience. On the other hand I once read a job advert in the SHP for a safety manager 30k on the strength of a NEBOSH cert! Makes you wonder! You could try voluntry work schools, charities etc this may help. In the mean time I suggest more qualifications.
Good luck Bud

Well... I'm here to lighten your sprits - I guess?
I got a job as a Health & Safety Advisor with the NEBOSH Cert, and my company is putting me through NVQ L4 next year. Granted I had some 3 years safety exp. in a pharmaceutical company, but it is possible.
Perseverance is the key - I applied for many many jobs, harassed every agency I could think of.
I think at the end of the day, if you get to interview, then it's down to your ability to persuade the interviewer you are right for the job.
Don't give up, and good luck!

Hi Roy
I have a friend who passed his General Certificate in August and is now on £40k working in construction. A lot of health and safety is about the ability to communicate and manage. He is an excellent communicator and manager so if you have got what it takes the jobs are there waiting for you.
Happy 2004

Just looking through your reply posts Roy, I hope you do find a suitable appointment within a company in H&S, there have been numerous positions that i have looked through on employment websites that only request the NGC for employment.
I am about to start the course in the next couple of weeks, to which i will use as a foundation to build upon, and later go for the diploma`s.
All the best for the future, wishing you a successful career mate.
Gareth

Hi Roy
Look in the Safety & Health Practitioner job pages - I had a glance throught the January issue and noticed at least one job that only asks for the Cert. There are usually a few. Sometimes employers ask for someone "willing to study for the NEBOSH Diploma".
I got my first safety job on the strength of experience alone. Had the Cert when I got my present job but my employer tells me that they were only interested in experience not qualifications. Both jobs well paid, much higher than average.
Good luck!

I acquired a job with just a general cert, you just have to persevere and get a good CV. Try all the agencies: sybol, principle people etc
