So many H&S jobs now couple environmental responsibility in as part of the job function.
Now I am staring down the barrel of redundancy, I have decided to self-fund some career development training for myself, including the DipSM. I haven't the resources to go for DipEM at the moment, but I would be very interested in doing an environmental equivalent of the NEBOSH general certificate if such a thing exists.
Suggestions please on how to gain some entry level knowledge in this field, preferable to include ISO14001 compliance as part of the syllabus.

Alec,
Good question well asked! - as the saying goes.
A couple of observations - there seems to be a growing trend for people looking to recruit QSHE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) or just SHE, and the increasing raft of environmental legislation (mostly seeming to come from the EU).
There appear to be a growing number of training providers of various descriptions offering courses leading to the higher level environmental qualifications (at a goodly cost to boot!) when, as you have pointed out, there perhaps should be an "entry level" 14001 qualification much as NEBOSH National General Cert.
It will be interesting to see if there's anybody out there with such a course in place, especially if it's by distance learning.
Regards
David

Hi Alec,
I have an IOSH Managing Environmental Responsibilities Certificate, which I gained from the University of Paisley (Scotland). This course gives a good grounding on environmental responsibilities it also touches on the requirements of ISO14001.
There may be Universities close to you with the same or equivalent courses.
Good luck with your search.
Gary.

Well I suppose that in a way I am fortunate because the NTU diploma has an environmental module which I have now passed.
However if anyone is looking for a quick fix (if there is such a thing)there is the University of Bath Intergrated Environmental Management courses by distance learning.
For about £500 and 3 months work you get an IEMA certificate with associate member status. They do CPD short courses as well as degree courses. In fact you can take it just as high as your budget will allow.
Hope this is helpful

Alec,
I'm doing the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma on a distance learning basis for a cost of £600 + vat. Compared to the £500 for a Certificate quoted by another respondee to this thread, you have to consider the Diploma.
My course is through ATM Safety & Environment. Along with some notes I've blagged from others who did the course on a full time basis and the Examiner's reports from NEBOSH, along with a considerable amount of my own time, I'm hopeful of passing in June.
