Hi,
Having completed the NEBOSH cert and just sat my NEBOSH Diploma 1, where do I go from here? Do I:
Continue in my current role as a operations technician and undertake the Diploma 2? Has anyone had experience of doing the Dip 2 without being in a HSE role?
Do I stop studying until I can find a permanent role in H&S, and then undertake part 2?
regards,
colin

If you were interested in working around Sheffield, I could be interested. The job involves setting up amd maintaining safety systems in rail recovery depots. We would be happy with Cert etc. so long as you have some relevant i.e engineering type experience.

Colin, I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago as a Health and Safety Representative.
I passed NEBOSH Cert and Dip1 at the first time of asking but knew that not working in a full time Health and Safety Role would seriously impede my chances of passing Dip2.
I took a year out gained some Health and safety work experience and now commence Dip2 in September.
Good Luck whichever way you go, this is not a definitive answer but merely my personal choice.
Regards
PL

Colin,
My personal opinion is that you would be very hard pressed to pass this exam if you were not working in a H&S role, however that said passing NEBOSH is very much exam technique and good underpinning knowledge.
the problem people have is getting the entrance qualifications to MIOSH (CMIOSH) where the jobs/better salary are, which at the end of the day is what its all about. if you are not in H&S then NVQ is a non starter and BSC would not get you the criteria.
difficult decision mate chicken and egg scenario. you have good qualification but not a great deal of 'relevant H&S' experience however I feel that there will be employers out their willing to take you on.
apply for jobs and then do the academic and experience together, even better if employer pays for this.
You have a couple of good things in your favour Cert and then Dip 1 and obviously the drive and commitment to succeed to get this in a non H&S Role, look at the persons who are in H&S roles who do not have this??
Best of luck mate and every success in what ever you may do! Consultancy may be a way forward for you to get the broad experience and once armed with Dip2 you would be a very marketable commodity.
