Hi All,
I am currently looking for my first position in health and safety, I have had various interviews but have still had no luck with that elusive first job, I'm based in Northamptonshire but am willing to relocate anywhere in the uk, I want a position that starts from the ground up as I have some H & S experience but purely in a generic sense, so if there is anyone out there who can help me out I would be grateful, I would also consider an administrative position in order to gain more experience and find a route in that way!
Regards
Jo

Difficult one Jo don't want to dishearten you. Vicious cirlce this no experience etc, luck always plays a big part though.
So you need to create your own! (hope this doesn't sound condescending not meant to)
1) I assume you have contacted all the agencies etc. Have a look for the discussion thread aimed at the austrialian trying his luck in the UK and asking for advice
One of the responders works in the H & S agency industry and after a few responces who had a little dig at the agencies he responded and offered his services so put him to the test!, put a discussion thread up with what responce you get.
2) If it is then the experience that is still holding you back, then get out the yellow pages & call all the training companies (including private & colleges),
H & S consultancy businesses in the area and offer your services then as a last resort offer them for free! as long as they give you a reference at the end.
Even if your working for free for a few weeks of your holiday away from your normal job working under the wing of someone carrying out the job this will help.
This will also help get you noticed and you never know they may even offer you position.
Some may take advantage of this situation, and its a crappy world but in the main you will probably get more out of it in the short term.
(a bit of marketing strategy get a safety advisors/ trainers name from the company your calling rather then a manager and ask to speak to them directly explain your situation I am sure most will understand your situation they all had to start somewhere, if they can't help ask them to point you in the direction of someone who may, if you can try and get a face to face meeting tell them just a few minutes of their time)
3)Or alternatively if you are working ask at work if they can help and allow you to develop some of their systems or get involved with EHS.
4) Can the Safety course provider help go in and see them and your tutor and if they can't see if they can put you in touch with any consultants or advisors who can offer you a temp place. Alot of course providers utilise the services of a consultant or training advisor so who knows.
5) Local branches of charity organisations may have a safety officer or use an outside advisor apply the same method.
Keep a list of all the peoples names you speak to and rate them positive to negative with comments if any give an indication they could help in the future follow them up. Be persistant, EHS Advisors are busy people they may forget.
I know none of us want to work for free, but who knows working for free for a few weeks may give you that lucky break.
When you get to the top! or win the lottery don't forget me.
Sorry I can't help anymore, don't give up! get the yellow pages out and search that net.
my direct email is pjkab@hotmail.com
All the best
Regards
Paul

Hi
Further suggestions, undertake a job where you can be the safety rep, and work your way in.
Contact your local business link or equivalent and see if they can help you.
All the best
Linda
