I am a 42 year old Warrant Officer in the Royal Engineers, whos 22 year contract is about to come to an end in about 12 months time, this could be earlier if the right job comes along.
During my managerial years I have found myself becoming more involved with Health and Safety issues and have for four years been activly involved as a H&S Advisor in environments that have included;
a. Young persons and adults training in bridge construction, explosives/demolitions, boat operating in both still and fast water, scaffolding, excavations, concreting and general engineering tasks.
and
b. Well Drilling, Bulk Fuel Installations including ship to shore, Construction Material Testing using radioactive equipment, Welder/Blacksmith workshop and vehicle workshop.
I have over this time had management appointments in survey engineering, facilities management, logistics and IT to name but a few.
I am confidently awaiting the results of my NEBOSH Gen Cert, have a management Diploma, BSC Cert in Safety Management and have provisionally booked a place on a NEBOSH Lev 4 Dip.
I am looking for a potential employer to give me the opportunity to expand on my H&S experience. Long term I would be interested in work, in any industary, in any H&S role. In addition, the opportunity during my leave to volunteer to shadow or help a H&S team so to gain experience would also be valuable.
I live in Nottingham and I am willing to travel up to 40 miles, closer if possible and preferably in the East Midlands. I have my own car and a clean driving license.
I would be happy to send my CV on to any potential employer who requests it via this forum, or upon request via this email address: rc_hunter@hotmail.com
I would like to take this opportunity to thank any potential employer for taking time to read this.
Regards,
Ross

Ross, with your previous experience have you thought about entering the safety world in construction? I say this as in my opinion the construction industry probably is one of the biggest employers of safety practitioners. This would require the attainment of the NEBOSH Construction Certificate which is at a similar study level to the General Certificate. This may assist you in gaining a position in a company where you can then take your DIP4 and carry out the workbased assignments.
I work for a construction company and we have employed 3 ex military personnel in our division and I know of at least 2 more in other divisions of the Group.
In the world of safety you need to demonstrate experience as well as qualifications and it will seem difficult as you need the qualifications to apply for the jobs advertised and to get the qualifications you need the work experience!!
Do you get the Safety and Health Practitioner (SHP) Magazine - if you haven't subscribed it is worth it as the careers section is very good.
I wish you luck.
Sylvia
