I passed the NEBOSH Cert. with Credit early 2004, and have spent the last 3-ish years working as an estates/accommodation manager with an emphasis on health & safety, and more recently EMS.
I love working within the H&S arena and the benefits to others of a job well done by me.
I want to take the Dip1, and generally take the leap forward in my caeer but unfortunately my employer is not as enthusiastic as I am. Having decided to fund this myself I began my quest, and how expensive is it to attain development. Why is there such a price tag on these courses stpping enthusiastic individuals to progress.

We could work that out together.
Lets start with the cost of staff to organise the course and prepare course
Transport
Cost of course venue, meals, drinks etc
Licence costs
NEBOSH costs
Lecturer costs
Number of guaranteed attendees
Anyone willing to start putting figures to any of this.

Rather than the Dip route, have you considered looking at NVQ.
Given that your training shall take place almost exclusively at your employers premises, and that they will get an immediate benefit from the work you carry out to put forward to your portfolio, you might find that they be a little more forthcoming with funding.
Further, you may well also find that it is considerably less expensive than the Diploma route if you are self funding.
As a training Company, we might be able to help with this insofar that we can always arrange budget plans for candidates who are self funding, in order to make the cost of the course more affordable.
If you want some further information, please contact me.

Chris,
Have you looked into the part time courses at local colleges? Many offer the Dip 1 and now 4. It is a lot cheaper than many other providers. Happy hunting.

Just to endorse Donna's comment; I did my Pt 1 via IOSH's portfolio route (now defunct) and my Pt II at a local college; cost for ptII was £675, still not chickenfeed but at the time commercial suppliers were charging up to 4,500 for the same course...
I can only sympathise with your predicament, sadly the fees that private firms charge are supported by the market so there's no likelihood that prices will drop ever,
John

Chris,
Another route is via Postgraduate Certificate.
The cost is between 2,000 - 2,500GBP, however, the PgC takes you to the same level if not higher than NEBOSH Dip2, within 1 year.
I am taking mine with Strathclyde University.
The initial outlays although high, I see as an investment in myself and will seek to regain the costs against increased salary.
Hope this helps and good luck in whichever route you decide to take.
Regards,
Neil

Chris,
I completely understand how you feel, as I'm in exactly the same boat having passed the Gen Cert earlier this year. I have tried various universities and centres, only to hit a financial brick wall. You can be so determined, but if you cannot afford the fee's, you feel like your wasting your time.
If you come up with a course that is affordable, then please let me know.
PS. My partner is currently studying the Dip part1, and she is really struggling. Everyone I speak to say the other routes are far easier.
