Posted By Ken Chappell We have a situation where we have some engineers working in a nuclear power station. Before the work started we put our method statements and risk assessments together, which the client has accepted. Since the work began the client has now insisted that our engineers wear additional PPE and follow extra precautions in certain areas, and quite rightly the engineers have become concerned that they may be exposed to greater risk than first thought. It has reached a stage where my company may have to attend site for a meeting with the client. The meeting would probably be held in Glasgow. We are looking for a consultant or specialist in the Nuclear field who will be able to provide us with some assistance and perhaps attend site with us to meet with the client. We feel that this is a specialist field and we need the help of an outside professional. If you feel that you will be able to assist my company please do not hesitate to get in touch. Many thanks in anticipation. Regards, Ken Chappell

Posted By Kevin Drew Ken, What you need is a consultant radiation protection adviser (RPA). I am an RPA myself and my company, RWE NUKEM Ltd, can provide the service although there are several other companies which also can provide. I suggest you perform an internet search, get prices, etc and select somebody appropriate. Don't expect it to be cheap, nationally there is a resource shortage in this field. I worked on a nuclear power station for 21 years and radiological conditions can and do change as work progresses. You should be reassured that note has been taken of this during the course of the work and controls revised and implemented. In my experience, there is generally a tendency to over specify controls and precautions during work of this nature. Most power stations in the UK have an excellent safety record despite what you might read in the daily papers. Kevin Drew
