Posted By Ian Minty I am involved in designing a training course at the moment for special needs workplace organisers going to low risk workplaces and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good packages (powerpoint or video) on hazard awareness and risk assessment. Any help would be appreciated. Also we are having a discussion at the moment on the level of qualifications and competency required for a work placement organiser for mainstream secondary schools? I would be interested in others views as we have been advised from one area that there is no one within the education service competent or qualified enough to undertake risk assessments in high risk areas, ie factories, workshops etc. Your opinions please.

Posted By Hazel Harvey Ian, The Employment NTO have as one of their free-standing units in health and safety a unit called 'Review health and safety procedures in workplaces'. This unit (D) maps out the competencies required of those reviewing health and safety in workplaces other than their own and gives a good indication of what might be required in a training course. Posted By peter gotch Hi Ian, We get vetted by or on behalf of Education Authorities from time to time. The standard of vetting is generally exceedingly poor (and when done by a so-called H&S consultant rather irritating). We had one in last year who didn't even bother to look at the area in which the pupil would be working! The latest in came with a questionnaire looking for COSHH assesments but not for general risk assessments! P

Posted By Stuart Nagle Ian. In addition to the above, if you do not have competency 'in-house' then you are almost certainly required to 'go-outside' and employ someone who is, such as a consultant etc, in order to comply with the H&S requirements. Stuart Nagle

Posted By Ian Minty Thanks for everyone's responses. It now looks as though we will be getting work experience re-introduced in our authority. To resolve the problems with the vetting and the ensure the placement providers are up to a sufficient H&S standard, the vetting and monitoring will be done by someone qualified to at least NEBOSH certificate level and they will have access to advice from the corporate H&S unit.
