Posted By John Webster Would a hospital patient contracting MRSA whilst in hospital be reportable under RIDDOR?
The question assumes the patient would have required admission to hospital if they had not already been there or that they have died from the condition. Does their illness/death result from our work? Does the fact that the infection has been introduced by another patient have any bearing? I would report the same happening to a member of staff, I'm just not so sure about patients and visitors.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Posted By Lance Morgan MRSA is an organism of clinical significance because of its antibiotic resistant patterns. In terms of its ability to cause disease is there any evidence to suggest it is any more significant than any other bacteria associated with HAI. As HAI is said to affect one in ten patients in acute hospital settings. Could this be described as appropriate. More specifically there is at present no requirement to report either under RIDDOR or the notifiable diseases (Public Health) Notifiable Diseases Act 1984.
As HAI is currently high on the NHS agenda who knows what will be required in future..
