Posted By George Wedgwood I am researching instances of safety management systems failure where companies have been carrying through some kind of change programme to reshape their business or downsize to minimise costs. These can be related generically but I need 4 or 5 cases for discussion with managers, to emphasise that attention to the details of H&S management at such a time is vital for company continued excellent performance. If you have any experience or examples of such failures that contributed to enforcement action or intervention by a Regulator, or even resulted in a catastrophic loss, I would be very interested to hear about them. I think we know how important change is when considering the potential increase in risk for an organisation but examples bring it to life. Please email me or call on 07836 718908. Thanks, George

Posted By Mark Preston This subject crops up from time to time on the US safety mailing list administered at the University of Vermont. I recall reading a few anecdotes over the years. If you think you can use examples from across the water (I'd lay good money that "downsizing" was originally an American neologism/euphemism), try searching their archive at http://list.uvm.edu/archives/safety.html I used "downsizing" as the search term and recorded 84 hits

Posted By Mark Preston Afterthought... You might also try searching the HSe's site with "organisational change" as your search term - there's particular at the HSE about its effects on nuclear and railway safety. There's also a fair amount of reserach being undertaken under the HSE's auspices on stress at work which examines the effects of organisational change including downsizing and delayering: here's an example of the sort of stuff you may find http://www.hse.gov.uk/re...899/noframes/psy_abs.htm http://www.hse.gov.uk/press/e00014.htm
