A friend of mine is a machine operator for a company that makes breakfast cereals. He approached me recently and told me that during an eight hour shift he is only allowed two fifteen minuet breaks! and during a twelve hour shift he is only allowed three fifteen minuet breaks! Surely this can't be right. I have tried to find legislation with regards to rest periods but I have been unsuccessful. Does anybody know of any legislation that I can refer to?
Your help would be appreciated.

The working time regulations state that a worker is entitled to an uninterrupted break of 20 minutes when working daily time is more than six hours. it should be taken in working time (however the regulations do not specify whether they are paid or not)
Where a pattern of work involving uninterruptable and monotonous activities puts the health and safety of the worker at risk, then the employer needs to consider granting regular breaks in order to reduce the risks.
I suggest he (or his Health and Safety Representative)gets a copy of the risk assessment associated with this task and highlights the need to have regular rest breaks.
