Posted By Lee Daniels Is a yard ramp used by fork lift trucks to load container lorries lifting equipment? The supplier is saying that the ramp must be inspected every 12 months to meet LOLER98. I am in favour of having it regularly inspected so the question I'm asking is purely academic, but does LOLER apply?

Posted By Frank Cooper Lee, If your ramps are not actually used to "lift" anything then I doubt very much if they come under LOLER. The ACOP defines lifting equipment as "work equipment for lifting or lowering loads and includes it's attachments used for achoring, fixing or supporting it".It includes any lifting accessories that attach a load to the machine in addition to the equipment which carries out the actual lifting function.Hence your FLT's are the lifting equipment. However, your ramps do come under PUWER which will require them to be "maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair". Hence they need to be checked frequently and repaired if faults are found. I think I would be following the advice given in the PUWER approved code of practice for maintenance! Hope that this helps, Regards, Frank Cooper
