Posted By Caroline James Whilst doing numerous DSE assessments recently, in a variety of locations, the most common complaint I seem to come across is the lighting, it being too bright, harsh or hot. As many of these areas have already had special 'DSE friendly' lighting installed, which is supposedly low reflective and non glare, I think it will be a struggle to persuade our employer to change it. However if I can provide as much information as possible on the negative effects caused by the current lighting, friendly as it is supposed to be, and evidence of an improvement as a result of an alternative then I might stand a better chance even if it has to be implemented over a period of time. So...has anyone out there had a similar response from staff and does anyone know of a miracle cure, preferably at a reasonable cost? Many people have expressed a desire to move away from overhead lighting to individual bankers lamps but I am sure I've read somewhere recently that this poses it's own health risks and is not recommended for large open plan office environments.

Posted By Ken Taylor When working with DSE,the introduction of additional points of light source is bad news due to associated glare, sight of lamps and filaments, the need for constant accommodation by the eye for different lighting levels, shadows, heat, etc. Good general overhead lighting should be OK if it's at a sensible level of illuminance. Whilst your luminaires are of the 'correct' type have you measured how bright they are?
