Posted By Malcolm Greenhouse I have just had several hundred smoke detectors changed due to age, more than 10 years old. The contractor has deposited 29 back with me saying that they where radioactive not optical and as such they were my hazardous waste that I have to dispose of. They have now provided a quote of £365 for disposing of them.
Does anyone have any experience of this and what are the rules for disposing of these low level radio active devices?

Posted By Barry Cooper Malcolm They are classified as hazardous waste and so should be disposed of accordingly. The cost you mentioned sounds reasonable, but make sure the company are a licence to carry and transfer waste and you have the appropriate documents - Waste carrier licence, Waste transfer note, The disposal route (and code) and that the disposal site is licenced to dispose of the devices (you should get a disposal document from the site and a copy of their licence)

Posted By Malcolm Greenhouse I have contacted the manufactures of the smoke alarms, Apollo and Nittan and both offer disposal at a third the price quoted by the contractor. Just thought I would let people know in case they have a similar problem in the future.
