Hi,
I have decided to carry out a PUWER assessment of general workshop equipment including pedestal drills, grinders etc and was wondering if anyone had a simple template checklist that would assist in the process. I have already carried out a detailed in depth assessment of heavy industrial equipment such as static circ saw, planers and spin moulder using a detailed RA form devised from the regs. This form is 5/6 pages long and a bit of an overkill for a grinder/drill etc. I really just need to assess the suitability, safety and condition of the machine as opposed to operator activity as this is covered in manufacturer's risks assessments supplied.
Any help appreciated
Gary

Hi Gary
I'm just looking at the same thing
My understanding is there is no specific legal requirement for a separate PUWER risk assessment so for a simple workshop a single simple risk assessment that include the pedestal drill etc.... might suffice
2. If that's not enough then I also agree with you most 'PUWER 'forms seem like overkill for simple machines such as pedestal drill but the same regs apply and the same issues of guarding, maintenance, inspection, information, emergency stops etc....need to, be covered
I have been thinking of creating an excel spread sheet Machines down the left hand column - Topics from PUWER and other hazards along the top and simple H/M/L score ... sorry I have not got it to pass on yet
Also with all due respect i think your wrong to exclude the operations from your RA... manufacturers are obliged to risk assess to ensure they design out hazards or provide adequate guards etc... but they cannot know the circumstances/ site where the machine is used

Hi Gary,
I always use a PUWER Assessment Sheet before conducting a Risk Assessment. I know its not really needed but helps a lot with a risk assessment. If you send me your e-mail address, I will send you what I've made.

Thanks for the response guys.
Suffolk man - your right about the manufacturers RAs i will review risks with users and include comments in the RA. Good to know I'm not the only one that considers the Puwer process a bit of an overkill - still better to do it right.
Stephen - it would be greatly appreciated if you could forward your method of doing this. I would be pleased to assist you in the future if required or able.
Only thing is i don't think i can provide my email? is this correct?

I think that it is implied in the PUWER that to comply, i.e, suitability, specific risks, training, information, protection against hazards etc. that to comply with the regs a RA would be required. A general RA covering the equipment and the activity that is being carried out may suffice.
I carry out specific PUWER RA for certain pieces of equipment and also a RA for the activity being carried out with the equipment also.

Hi all,
Tony - thanks for the checklist, just the ticket!
Can anyone enlighten me on rundown times for bench mounted / pedestal grinders? I am aware of the 10 sec rule for Woodworking equipment such as planers/circ saws etc but can't find anything on grinders. Perhaps there is none and it comes down to RA?
We have a pedestal grinder with a run down time of over 4 mins which seems excessive.
Any thoughts
Gary
