Posted By Safe System Hi All, I have noticed that there are quite a few people on this side of the side that are starting out or looking to get into H&S... so.. Lets give them an idea what it is all about and do a 'very generic' day in the life of a safety advisor... or not.. you decide!

Posted By Bob Youel On a nice summer day walk around the parks and the keep-fit centers and in winter stay indoors whilst carrying a lot of paper and looking busy or is that what some managers think we do?

Posted By Flic Every day is different but ..... Find contractor cutting kerbstones beside our building dry and with no respiratory protection. Have a little word with him, and he gives all kinds of excuse why he is doing it that way. Trace the project back to the project owner and pass problem on to them. Later he is to be seen doing it correctly. Update the training records for joiners/leavers and recent attendees on induction training. Discover I am getting dangerously low on allocation of memory by the IT people and archive lots of stuff from the network onto a CD. The Fire alarm system appears to have a terminal fault and I spend some time figuring out what the implications of the fault are, and trying to establish whether the order to replace it really has been put through. Workarounds are established to enable continued safe occupation of building. In anticipation of a visit from the pressure systems inspector, survey the site trying to find the equipment (some of it is mobile and its position moves frequently). You bet it will be in a different place tomorrow. Visitor to office wants to know what to do when an expensive piece of electrical equipment apparently fails the earth test on PAT testing. Read documents on the upcoming impacts of 2004/40/EC with a view to making comments. Flic

Posted By Pete48 Visit a family garage (motor vehicle repair), a holiday camp, an estate agent, a farmer, a pony sanctuary, a hairdresser, a fish farm, an agricultural engineer and a supermarket. Answer questions about: expectant mothers; event risk assessment; kids on farms; electrical safety in offices; what will win the 3.30 at Kempton; can we sell food for red nose day; when will the England cricket team ever win another test match; why does tea taste so much better than coffee in the afternoon; working from ladders; is this a RIDDOR; what weight is safe to lift; can I get a free eye test; my manager says I can't have a special chair for my workstation; is the company allowed to get me this stressed; can the roofing contractor throw the rubbish from the roof if it is only going to fall in the car park which is closed and roped off; someone has spilt water outside my office and I can't get out because I am frightened of slipping; can I get an allocated parking space because I have to carry heavy equipment from my car every day; check out the IOSH forum; write 8 summary reports; check out 40 e-mails; answer 15; laugh out loud at 4 and file the rest. Of course I answer them all with equal aplomb and accuracy. After all the safety guy should know, it's safety isn't it? Then at last...open a bottle of half decent red wine and........with my tongue firmly placed in cheek. Get up and do it all again tomorrow. Super, smashing, great. (With apologies to Jim Bowen)

Posted By David Bannister Spent the entire day yesterday sat in front of the computer attempting to catch up with writing overdue reports, punctuated with emails, telephone calls from advertising salespeople, a call to a fellow forum-user, visits to this forum, called away to receive a delivery on behalf of my daughter, call from her to check it had arrived, made a few drinks, reheated lunch & ate it, decided to take the photos off the camera for inclusion in the reports, got sidetracked in Photoshop, oops it's getting dark. Today: attempt to catch up with overdue reports...

Posted By Crim One day recently I dropped the kids off at school then drove the 260 miles to Norwich. Met site manager on site and carried out safety inspection, drove to another site in Norwich, (lucky me 2 jobs in one place), carry out another inspection then drive to hotel. Arrive at hotel after 5pm, quick shower before dinner then relax (fall asleep) in front of the TV. Next day drove the 260 miles home.

Posted By Garry Yesterday Drove the 256 km from Dublin to Cork. Spent 40 Min's carrying out a site safety audit. Spoke for 5 minutes in the meeting and then listened to designers discuss specs and variations for 2 hours. Back into the car, listened to our engineer rabbit on for 3 hours about how engineers are misunderstood, how he is always right, how innovative and creative he is becoming, how he was in the top 3 students in his school, how fast his car is, how big his lawn is and how engineers will eventually take over the world. Noticed a grinding noise, stopped the car got got out, quick check, back into the care, heard grinding again, realised it was my teeth. Dropped off Leonardo De Vinci. Got home at 9:00 pm. Switched off and r-e-l-a-x-e-d.
