Hi folks,
I requested an up-to-date msds from one of our suppliers. I felt I couldn't do a coshh r/a using it as it didn't have a CAS No or any info about chemicals in the product and various other ommissions.
I contacted the company about this and got a slightly better msds. It still has no info on chemicals within it and the reply said "When a CAS number is obtained, much of the confidential information must be submitted, which we do not want".
Is this usual? I have not come across it before with any other company I deal with.

If the product is classified as hazardous for supply the under CHIP they must supply a suitable MSDS.

Martin,
The msds sent says it is toxic to aquatic environment R51/53 and dispose of as hazardous waste S60..I assume as it is a strong colourant.
Also it is a weak sensitizer according to a test result.
How can one insist on more info?

Does the MSDS comply with Reg 5 of CHIP ie does the information given enable you to take the necessary measures relating to H & S at work and protecting the environment?

Paul,
I don't believe it does in that it has very little or no technical info to enable me to base my r/a on.

I don't think there has ever been a prosecution under Reg 5 of CHIP; perhaps this could be the first!!

Well... the answer seems to be tell the supplier I will shop elsewhere if they don't give me the info I ask for!!!
Long live H&S

In my experience the MSDS info that suppliers provide ranges from the very excellent to the very poor.
You could obtain an MSDS from another source and compare and contrast. Coupled with use of EH40 and other publically-available sources you may find enough to base an initial assessment on.
Or, as you have suggested - use your feet and shop elsewhere. This may be the easiest and less stressful option.
Good luck.

The product may well be a "preparation" ie mixture of substances. If it is properly classified and you understand the hazards, do you really need a detailed breakdown? If so, why?
From memory (I used to produce MSDS's for preparations) the supplier is supposed to list the major components that contribute to it's classification, but "formulation" detail, which is commercial, can be withheld.
