Posted By Ant Hi All, I am seeking some advice on the implementation of a glove policy. I am the Group Health and Safety Manager for a large Construction Company. The reason for the policy is the number of hand and finger injuries which have occured on our sites over the last 12 months. This post is for advice on how to implement the policy successfully rather than the benefits of such a policy. Does any one have any advice on how they have implemented such a policy in the past or lessons learned. I am extremely grateful for any help/advice you can offer. Thanks for your help/time. Kind Regards, Anthony Tetlow CMIOSH

Posted By Robert Paterson Hi Andrew Have you done a glove survey yet? Companies such as marigold will come on site and assess what type of gloves would be suitable. Last time I used them it was free and I got loads of samples to try. Good idea to introduce a trial period of glove use with monitoring. Involve employees at the earliest opportunity. Look at the number of accidents in different areas of work or individuals - check trends. I always used to introduce a leading in period before making it compulsory. Hope that has helped Regards Robert Paterson

Posted By Warren Fothergill The first thing I would say on this post is that surely we should be looking at prevention, thus avoiding the potential for hand injuries and not just 'lets bring in PPE' which is the last resort (though I'm sure eggs and sucking spring to mind). Review the risk assessment and invovle the contractors, see what views they have. They may well provide alternative solutions to the problems. If you can't avoid, then approach your PPE suppliers to arrange visits from the glove manufacturers and discuss the varying issues. Get representation from them as previously stated, it will get buy in from them at the earliest opportunity. Regards Waz

Posted By stephen d clarke Hi, I'd follow the general advice in HSG65 but applied to you glove policy i.e. POPIMAR policy - organisation (4Cs) - planning and implementing - measuring/monitoring (active and reactive) - audit and review. Steve

Posted By Bob Youel Implimenting the policy Once you have everything sorted including risk aseessment/job analysis, a trial period, education etc I suggest that you tell senior management about the policy and its back up processes etc; they then cascade it down via word of mouth e.g. tool box talks [NOT e-mails and posters!] and gain understanding and thereafter prove to you that they have done what was wanted and all staff that need to know do know. Thereafter instantly discipline anybody that is not adhering to the policy inclusive of managers who 'blind eye' noting that your policy should be flexible enough to cover every foreseeable situation and it is not just a blanket policy because blanket policies are easier for management and not for the job

Posted By Raymond Rapp Ant The difficulty I have found in a mandatory glove policy is where the user has problems with dexterity. There is a wide variety of gloves available but even so, some tasks are difficult if not impossible to carry out using gloves. How is your policy going to deal with these issues? Ray
