OSHA accident rate stats are based on 200 000 hours exposure.

Originally this was meant as a percentage of workers injured. At the time the US work week was 40 hours and it was assumed that they worked 50 weeks per year.

40 x 50 = 2000. 100 employees added up to 200 000 exposure hours per year. Thus one time losing injury during the year amongst 100 employees equaled a percentage of 1 and an OSHA LWC rate of 1.

Since you requested the idiot's guide, definitions of what constitutes an LWC, RWC, MTC and "Recordable" is out of the scope and you could refer to the OSHA web site.
