Other fields have Newton, Shakespear, Roger Bannister, George Best but who is your h&s hero? Beyond Lord Robin (father of the HSWA) and Lord Atkins (duty of care) I am struggling.

Any other suggestions?

I want to say Homer. But I won't as he isn't exactly dedicated to the profession... or real.

We don't really have any people out there who are 'famous' for health and safety.

I guess I'd have to say Sir Ranulph Fiennes, but again have some reservations there.

Open to suggestions.

This theme has appeared on this forum before. Without a doubt, I suggest Lord Robens, both as chairman of the National Coal Board and then for his work which led to the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974. For details have a look at the thread "Lord Robens - Safety hero or villain?" at

My typical response would be:

"I don't follow standards, I set them". Modest? I think not ... LOL

Going for the non obvious ... my tutors on the dratted NEBOSH course ... Pete Gibson and John Print (Coventry area).
Without them I'd never have completed (at a later date) my Dip course and gained my Grad. IOSH. Thanks Chaps.

Lord Robens would of course be up there, and I'd also include Allan St John Holt OBE.

One of my health & safety heroes is Ian Whittingham, sadly now deceased. He did more for h&s by speaking at forums on sites about his accident and way of life than any safety videos ever will.

Percivall Potts of course! For those of us who did the Occupational Hygiene degree at Southbank in the 1980's - he was the first hero we were taught about. Here is an extract from the Wikipedia entry:

"In 1775, Potts found an association between exposure to soot and a high incidence of scrotal cancer in chimney sweeps. This was the first occupational link to cancer, and Potts was the first person to demonstrate that a malignancy could be caused by an environmental carcinogen. Potts early investigations contributed to the science of epidemiology and the Chimney Sweeper's Act of 1788."

At college, we were taught that the Act prevented little boys having to work up chimneys. Although, I just did an internet search on this Act and it appears it was not quite that clear cut and was completely unenforceable. However, it was a start!
