Can anyone clarify - is carpal tunnel syndrome a reportable disease if the cause is related to DSE and not hand held vibrating tool?

I dont think it is but just need to check

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is a medical condition not a disease, and therefore not reportable.

I would be a little more cautious about this one.

Schedule 3 of RIDDOR (Reportable diseases), item 8, states:
Cramp of the hand or forearm due to repetitive movements
and describe this as:
Work involving prolonged periods of handwriting, typing or other repetitive movements of the fingers, hand or arm.

Perhaps it might be prudent to check with your local HSE office.

I didn't look far enough!!!

Item 13 specifically mentions Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

So yes - reportable.

Hi Chris

Yes Item 13 does refer to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome but in relation to "Work involving the use of hand-held vibrating tools" but this incident doesnt relate to it.

Or am I misreading Schedule 3 to RIDDOR? The layout of Schedule 3 doesnt help with the understanding!

cheers

I agree that the schedules on Reportable Diseases are not always that helpful. Like you I would read Carpal Tunnel syndrome is only reportable where hand held vibrating tools. Item 8 talks about Cramp, and Item 12 Traumatic inflammation of tendons. A quick google search (other search engines are available) suggests that Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is not either of these but due to the nerves - so it would appear not to be reportable under RIDDOR. Unless an occupational Hygienist or Doctor who understands how the nerves get damaged can tell us otherwise.

Carpal Tunnel - no matter what the cause at work - will mean the inability to carry out normal duties - therefore reportable in my eyes.

Surgery was the only cure for me.
