can anybody update me re any specific training a standard lorry driver will need to move asbestos loads via the public highway

There will be no loading / unloading etc or other interface with the load and info re consignment notes is already sorted - this would save me some time to up date myself

Thanks in advance

It does not matter whether he interacts with the load he is the driver and must comply with DG Regs and ADR

Refer to Reg 24 (and schedule 2) of CAR 2006 and Section 7 of HSG247 for some information and guidance. I`m not familiar with the CDG regs but reckon they must be a good grounding for someone carrying out this type of activity. A simple asbestos awareness course may be all thats needed over and above this. There are weight limits for the waste, where you are in the UK, asbestos type & form, labelling, etc. to consider so bear this in mind. Asbestos awareness training is easy to plan and administer. Shouldn`t be too expensive either.

Guys / girls

Asbestos waste UN Numbers 2212 and 2590 are classified as class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous goods for transport.

If you are carrying more than 330kg of FIBROUS blue / Brown (UN2212) then the full scope of ADR / CDG applies.

If you are carrying more than 1000kg of FIBROUS White (UN2590) then full ADR and CDG applies.

You are exempt if below this limit or if it is BONDED Asbestos Waste (Special Provision 168 applies).

Your driver must be ADR trained and have a valid Driving licence the passenger must be trained as well.

you must.
display the Orange Rectangle front and rear
carry the emergency equipment reqired by ADR, shovel, drain covers, plastic container, torches, wheel cocks, hi viz, RPE & PPE etc and Fire extinguisher 8kg (6kg on vehicle AND 2KG IN CAB dry powder)(changes due on 1/7/09)
have a trem card (Instructions in writing)
have access to a DGSA.

If you are having asbestos waste removed from your premises by a Waste Contractor you are also legally required to check the driver has a valid ADR driving licence which cover the class of goods being carried. Thats why the waste removal guys pay their ADR drivers more than driver who are not ADR.
CAR only touches on this and you really need to be fully aware of CDG and ADR and do not do this until you are aware as the Police and VOSA will hang you!
